Studio 12 Gallery features “Flood the Subconscious” by Davyd Whaley. June 19th – August 16th, 2010. Davyd Whaley creates a visual odyssey within the confines of Studio 12 Gallery with larger than life abstract paintings. They outline a visual concept of mythology and civilizations long gone. Babylon and No. 2 are the crowning pieces of the exhibit.Smallest of the prime numbers “No. 2” has greatness and beauty in its origin. Two has the claim as the primordial archetype. It is represented as balance, reflecting duality of the Taoist principles of Yin-Yang. “No.2” shows us the energy within ourselves and the importance of responding calmly to conflict. Eastern culture considers this number to be associated with great luck and happiness. In ancient times “No. 2” was called a glyph and looked more like an equal sign (=).
“No. 2” is presented with “Babylon” and represents the support system of the Babylonian empire, the two parts being Baal and Ishtar. It leaves us with present day thoughts on duality, in which "we as a society treat one group of persons differently from another. It speaks about double standards, which existed for married life, where a wife might be put to death for adultery, while a husband is free to enjoy as many women as he chooses, provided he does not seduce the wife of another man."(Mythology of Sex, by Sarah Dening, Chapter 3)

Studio 12 Gallery features Liminal Imagery by Dan Jahn. April 23rd – June 18th, 2010. The moments of heightened consciousness people experience in sacred spaces is liminal -- normal limits to thought, self-understanding, and behavior are relaxed -- a situation which can lead to new perspectives. But such moments are transient, so too are these images liminal for me. This show exhibits a number of photographs taken of sacred places, each photograph has decayed and been transferred to hand-aged fresco on wood, echoing the human urge through the centuries to paint our sacred spaces, from cave walls to renaissance churches. Opening Reception with the artist will be First Friday May 7th, 2010 4pm-9pm and First Friday June 4th, 2010 4pm-9pm.
Seasons: Landscape Paintings by Carl W. Illig
(1910-1987)March 31st,
2010 – April 17th, 2010.Studio
12 Gallery features regional landscape paintings from this important
rediscovered artist. The works depict New York, and Pennsylvania, where Illig
frequently painted onsite. Carl W. Illig was born in East Aurora, New York,
where he later studied under Arthur Kowalski. He was also a student and
colleague of Emile Gruppe during summers spent in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Illig’s
distinctive energetic brushstroke captures the color and light of the
region. Best known for Western New York landscapes and Gloucester harbor
scenes, Illig’s work carries on a long tradition of regional landscape painters
and recalls Charles Burchfield, Carl Peters, Gruppe, and others. In the late
1950s, Illig observed the restoration of murals by Alexis Fournier at the
Roycroft Campus (East Aurora, NY). He was also a member of The Buffalo
Society of Artists.

Landscape
2.0
March 5th, 2010 – April 17th, 2010
Opening Reception with the artists:
Friday, March 5th and April 2nd, 2010 4:00pm-9:00pm
Studio 12 Gallery located at 209 Kalamath St #12, Denver, Co 80223 presents Landscapes
2.0, March 5th, 2010 – April 17th, 2010. A
group show featuring local artists: Alix Evendorff, Bill Evilsizer, Sharon
Feder, Lance Jackson, Marston A. Jaquis, Nemo, Laura Politzki, Lisa Purdy.
This show brings to the public a different way of viewing our surroundings.
Each work of art references the traditional landscape but interprets the world
around us in a new and fresh way. Seen through the eye of the artist and
utilizing a variety of mediums and techniques, these artists expand upon the
concept of the landscape. This show is not about the classic landscape; rather
it is about the new landscape and the proportions, colors and textures that
speak to a new way of describing the world in which we live. The artwork
filling our walls in the early months of spring will bloom with vibrant color,
unique form and texture, expressing unique ideas not often associated with the
world around us. From post-industrial to abstract expressionism, all styles
create a new visual for the surroundings in our life to think and live upon.
Mark Friday
On/Off
January
15th, 2010 – February 26th, 2010
Opening
Reception with the artists:
January 15th, 2010 4:00pm-9:00pm
and
First Friday, February 5th, 2010 4:00pm-9:00pm
Studio 12 Gallery will be featuring Mark
Friday’s On/Off January 15th, 2010 through February 26th,
2010. We will be holding two opening receptions, one on January 15th,
2010 and the other on the First Friday, February 5th, 2010.
Mark Friday’s On/Off exhibition is largely constructed from familiar and
obscure discarded pieces of wood and metal. The work suggests past views
of the future, has vague references to architecture, scientific invention, and
religious iconography. The element of interior light, gives the work a dual
nature. The pieces can be viewed in entirely diverse conditions, depending on
interior\exterior light choices. In a darkened environment, the internal
light sources come alive, enhancing the work's inner structures and in some
cases projecting light patterns beyond their boundaries. In a more typical
viewing condition, external light dominates, enhancing the works basic
structure, color and textures.
